Allgemeine HNO

The Division of General Otorhinolaryngology is responsible for all aspects of diagnostics, conservative therapy and surgery in otorhinolaryngology and for issues affecting the head and neck.

The division focuses on the detection and endoscopic treatment of diseases of the inner nose, paranasal sinuses and adjacent skull base. Graz is a global pioneer in this field as well as in the treatment of tumors in this region of the body, which is conducted in close cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery.

A special concern are malignant tumors of the head and neck, their early detection and maintenance of the function of the respective organ systems. The division closely cooperates with the Division of Oncology and the Radiation Therapy Center. The weekly interdisciplinary tumor board coordinates the treatment and care of patients with malignant ENT tumors.

Another focus is on ear operations to improve hearing. Under the surgical microscope, extremely fine microsurgical procedures are performed to repair eardrum perforations (myringoplasty), to remove cholesteatomas and to reconstruct the ossicular chain (tympanoplasty) or in the case of otosclerosis to restore the sound transmission chain (stapedioplasty). In addition, the division offers the complete spectrum of partially and totally implantable hearing aids.

The staff of the interdisciplinary sleep medicine research area diagnose and treat sleep-related breathing disorders such as abnormal snoring or obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, whose prevalence is rapidly increasing. Our range of surgical treatments has recently been expanded to include hypoglossal nerve stimulator implants.

The uniqueness and the added value of our division are the result of the symbiosis between patient care, research and education. The division is jointly operated by the Medical University of Graz and the Styrian Hospital Association (KAGes). This interdisciplinary cooperation between both providers at the University Hospital Graz site is also reflected on our website. More information on patient care can be found at the University Hospital Graz website.

Pioneering work

Our division focuses on the detection and endoscopic treatment of diseases of the inner nose, paranasal sinuses and adjacent base of the skull. Graz is a global pioneer in this field as well as in the treatment of tumors in this region of the body. In most cases, radical external surgery can be avoided. In cooperation with the Department of Neurosurgery, minimally invasive endoscopic skull base surgery is promoted. Pituitary adenomas as well as other (intercranial) lesions can also be operated on using transnasal endoscopy.
